Highlights from 𝑨 𝑺𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒏 𝑬𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 by Julian Barnes. There are so many brilliant sentences, thoughts, reflections in this little gem of a book that you find yourself rereading entire pages! This is a compilation of a few of my favourites.

Barnes’ writing is elegant, concise and full of depth as well as wit and warmth. It’s a short book (160 pages), yet packed with philosophical thoughts, reflections, humour and insights on human behaviour. The main character’s portrayal through the story is so skilfully executed - and the underlying psychological tension so carefully increased - that during the final pages you’d think you’re reading a novel from the thriller shelf!

𝑨 𝑺𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒏 𝑬𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 is a book about youth, friendship, first love, aging and the mechanics of memory. It made me laugh out loud (the dialogues are hilarious!), but it also moved me deeply. Julian Barnes has definitely gained himself a spot among my favourite authors.

Impossible to choose a favourite among her books (and I haven’t read them all!) and her films, but I loved ’Heartburn’. And in the latter category I would probably pick ’You’ve Got Mail’. Or ’When Harry Met Sally’…. or ’Sleepless in Seattle’? ツ

I can think of no other author capable of portraying true struggle and personal challenges (chaos!) with such wit and humour as Ephron. Simply brilliant!

The lists of things she would/wouldn’t miss (repost from @words_of_women) are from the last pages of ’I Remember Nothing’, her last book.

I find comfort in Keen’s words these days, because one feels 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒍𝒚 (and constantly) lazy during prolonged periods of extreme heat. No use in trying to fight it either; your body -and mind!- change their pace without even asking for permission.

So, lazy or not, in my defence, during a heatwave that shows no sign of loosening its grip, one can but try to cope. Respectably, if possible ツ
