Tried (but failed!) to suppress the urge to share my garden’s first dahlias of the year (mine start to bloom when everyone else is digging up their tubers for winter storage!). So to soften the hubris effect, I chose one of my favourite book covers to match the miracle on the tray: ‘Travels with a Writing Brush. Classical Japanese travel writing from the Man’yōshū to Bashō.’ (Penguin Classics).

My pre-ordered copy of @_kimberlysnyder ’s ’The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts’ is delayed for another week, so while I wait, I thought I’d read ’The Holy Science’, the teachings of Sri Yukteswar that inspired her work and research on the heart and the heart-brain coherence.

’The Holy Science’ is a short book, but dense with information and insights on astronomy/astrology and the cosmic cycles (Yugas), Yukteswar’s theory about the five stages of the heart (and how these are directly linked to the brain/mind), the parallells between universal religions, the human enlightenment through history, etc.

Some paragraphs benefit from a second (or third!) reading for deeper assimilation, and I really appreciated that this edition includes a chapter with additional content explaining the teaching’s key topics (and yes, I loved the cover! ✨).

This book is a true gem if you have an interest in ancient teachings, philosophy and the science behind human growth – and the fascinating theory of the five hearts! Now I can’t wait to read @_kimberlysnyder’s book! 🧡

Inspired by @librarian.in.the.woods , I am about to immerse myself in Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story collections. I loved ’In Other Words’ (recommended to all language/translation, linguist fellow nerds out there), but have never read her short story prose, so… here I am!

One thing that I do know before even opening ’Interpreter of Maladies’ (winner of the Pulitzer Prize 2000) and then ’Unaccustomed Earth’, is that I am far more drawn to the soft, warm and earthy colours of ’In Other Words’ , but who’s judging a book by the cover? ツ

A small mid-week portion of Robert Frost: Tobias Menzies reading ’Nothing Gold Can Stay’.

I see a strong connection to the Japanese term ’Mono no aware’ (物の哀れ) and its appreciation of the fleeting beauty, youth, summer – the gold.. There’s a hint of sadness in it, a melancholic feeling while taking in -and accepting- the transitory nature of things.

I hope we alll get a good day, one with great tastiing coffee, unexpected smiles and good conversations, savouring the ’gold’. ♡
