浮世 🇯🇵 The medieval interpretation of u 浮世

🇯🇵 The medieval interpretation of ukiyo is closely linked to Buddhism, meaning a transient, unreliable world, whereas the more modern meaning explains a state of mind rooted in embracing the present, detached from life’s hardships.

I prefer (and wouldn’t mind living according to) the contemporary interpretation… ツ

Who else finds the Japanese terms fascinating? So many nuances distilled into a complex, yet crystal clear definition. Love it!

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒂, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒂 | Iris Murdoch

This is one of the book gifts from last Christmas that went straight into the tbr stack!

📋Synopsis:
Charles Arrowby, leading light of England's theatrical set, retires from glittering London to an isolated home by the sea. He plans to write a memoir about his great love affair with Clement Makin, his mentor, both professionally and personally, and amuse himself with Lizzie, an actress he has strung along for many years. None of his plans work out, and his memoir evolves into a riveting chronicle of the strange events and unexpected visitors-some real, some spectral-that disrupt his world and shake his oversized ego to its very core.

I’ve seen more words than resolutions for the ne I’ve seen more words than resolutions for the new year on social media and it made me think about what mine would be. I think 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕 reflects my attitude (yes, attitude, not hope nor expectations) towards 2023 pretty well; trust in the reassured, confident sense of the word, as a synonym to faith.

I then couldn’t resist searching for quotes about trust and found some good ones:

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.“
– J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
(if only there was a way to avoid the adulthood trap!)

Maya Angelou once referred to people who don’t walk their talk, who act incoherently, and therefore appear untrustworthy. She quoted an African saying that made me laugh: “Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.“ ツ

“Trust yourself, you know more than you think you do.“
– Benjamin Spock

And then, of course, the master:

“Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.“
– William Shakespeare
